Louisville homeowners notice hard water at the sink long before they look for water softener systems. Glasses film. Shower doors haze. Soap feels lazy. A locally owned company can walk the house with you, talk through what you are seeing, and quote a system that fits how you actually use water.
This guide is about water softener installation in Louisville — city service and well service as two kinds of homes we visit, not a science paper on the utility.
What a water softener is for
A water softener is a whole-house appliance. It treats the water that feeds showers, laundry, the dishwasher, and most fixtures. It is not a pitcher and it is not a fridge filter.
People call us when they are tired of:
- White crust on faucets and showerheads
- Spots that survive the dishwasher
- Dry, tight skin after a shower
- Extra soap, extra detergent, extra rinse time
- Scale they can see on heating elements or kettle walls
Those are homeowner observations. They are enough to start a conversation. We come to you for a free in-home sink test — about fifteen minutes at your kitchen sink — then look at the plumbing layout and what you want to change. Schedule Online.
City homes and well homes
Louisville has both. City service and well service are two service types we handle, not two scare stories.
City homes usually want softer showers, cleaner glass, and less scale on fixtures. Taste and chlorine odor, if they bother you, are often a filtration question — not something a softener alone is meant to solve. We will say that plainly if a filter or a drinking-water system is the better next step.
Well homes can need softening plus other treatment (iron, sulfur odor, sediment) depending on what you see and smell. We will not invent a well diagnosis from the driveway. We talk through stains, odor, and how the well is used, then quote equipment that matches that conversation.
If you are not sure which setup you have, say so on the consult. That is a normal first question.
Softener, conditioner, and filter — keep the jobs separate
Search results mix these words. Keep them straight:
- Water softener. The usual answer for scale, spots, and soap that will not lather.
- Salt-free conditioner. A different approach some homeowners prefer. It is not the same machine as a salt softener. We can discuss it if that is what you want.
- Whole-house filter. Taste, odor, sediment, and other “what is in the tap” concerns. Often paired with a softener. Not a substitute for one if scale is the problem.
- Reverse osmosis. Drinking water at one tap (usually the kitchen). It does not soften the shower.
Alderstone Water sells and installs these as a set of residential options. You do not have to buy every piece. The consult is how we decide what belongs in this house.
What installation looks like in a Louisville house
Every house is a little different — basement, crawl, garage, or utility closet. A good install plan covers:
- Where the unit will sit and how you will reach salt or service parts
- How it ties into the existing plumbing
- Whether an outside hose bib stays untreated (common request)
- Drain and electrical needs
- How it will live next to a filter or RO if you add those later
We are a small, owner-led Louisville company. Qualified installation technicians do the work. We are not a national franchise pitch and we are not a plumbing coupon. The visit is a consult and a written quote. No high-pressure close.
We will not quote a price in a blog post. Pricing belongs on the quote for your house.
How to live with a softener (plain talk)
If you choose a salt softener, you will add salt on a schedule. That is normal. You will notice the shower first — soap rinses cleaner. Glassware usually follows. Scale on existing pipes does not vanish overnight; new scale is what you are trying to slow.
Maintenance and filter replacement, when you have other equipment on the same manifold, are part of owning the system. Ask about that on the consult so you know who to call later.
Salt-free conditioning, if that is the path, has a different upkeep story. We will not blur the two in a sales sentence.
When a softener is not the first recommendation
Sometimes the house is asking for something else:
- You only care about drinking water at the kitchen sink → reverse osmosis
- You mainly notice taste or odor on city water → whole-house filtration
- You see rust-colored stains or smell sulfur on a well → iron or sulfur treatment may come first or sit beside the softener
Saying “not yet” is part of the job. Alderstone Water would rather quote the right system than sell a softener into the wrong problem.
Free in-home sink test and local consult
We come to you, test at your kitchen sink, and show results on the spot — about fifteen minutes, free. That visit is also the consult for Louisville water treatment: walk the home, name the problems you care about, and leave with a clear quote if treatment makes sense.
